What Acupuncture Isn’t – Western Medicine Misconception

Acupuncture often can seem an enigma to many people unfamiliar with this ancient practice. As a result many misconceptions exist and prevent people who would benefit from seeing an acupuncturist to seek help or return after the first appointment.

Most people draw from their experience of Western medicine and approach acupuncture with set expectations – most commonly with a desire to be “healed” or “fixed” after the first session and feeling disappointment or frustration if this is not the case. The ancient art of acupuncture has been used in Asia for centuries to address many conditions and relieve pain. In fact acupuncture is a practice 3,500 years older than traditional Western medicine.

Akin to going to the doctor and walking away with a course of antibiotics prescribed over a period of time, after an initial consultation with an acupuncturist you will have a course of sessions and usually see results after four to six sessions.

Anyone experiencing any degree of pain or discomfort will want to have enduring results. This requires patience, perseverance and willingness to make lifestyle adjustments and be involved in their own healing process.
